The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has released its 2025 Public Transportation Vehicle Database, providing detailed information on the bus and rail fleets operated by public transit agencies in the United States and Canada.
The database covers 155 agencies: 135 operating bus services, 37 with rail operations, and some running both. It presents fleet characteristics, vehicle specifications and equipment details, as well as data on accessibility and operational technologies.

APTA President and Chief Executive Paul P. Skoutelas said:APTA’s Public Transportation Vehicle Database is an indispensable tool for understanding the current state and future direction of our nation’s transit fleets. Through this resource, we’re equipping policymakers, including Members of Congress and their staffs, with the data they need to make informed decisions about critical public transportation infrastructure and funding needs.
The 2025 edition indicates a widespread presence of on-board safety systems. According to the data:
- 87 percent of buses are fitted with security cameras
- More than 3,000 buses now carry pedestrian and bicycle detection technology to support collision avoidance
Figures also show the integration of technologies designed to improve passenger experience:
- 87 percent of light rail vehicles include automated stop announcements
- Bike racks are available on 81 percent of buses and 53 percent of light rail vehicles
- 83 percent of buses offer Wi-Fi and other on-board amenities
Meanwhile, tracking and fleet management systems are increasingly standard across networks:
- 87 percent of buses and 81 percent of light rail vehicles are fitted with automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems, enabling real-time service information
- Advanced fleet management software has been widely deployed among larger operators
Skoutelas added:The 2025 Database reveals impressive adoption rates of advanced technologies across multiple transit modes that directly impact riders and communities. From enhanced security to real-time information systems, agencies are leveraging innovation to create safer, more reliable transportation options.
Beyond current fleet data, the 2025 Public Transportation Vehicle Database also includes:
- Summary tables organised by vehicle type, manufacturer, size and year of construction
- A market section covering new orders, planned acquisitions and costs
- Information on safety equipment such as collision mitigation, autonomous braking and pedestrian detection
- Data on modes recently incorporated into the National Transit Database, including bus rapid transit, hybrid rail, commuter bus and streetcar
