Italian RATP Dev subsidiary, Autolinee Toscane, has introduced 25 new 12-metre electric buses into Florence, as well as activated a new, 22-space 1.72 MW charging infrastructure site at its Peretola depot.

The development has been funded by the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and forms part of the Next Generation EU programme.

Each new vehicle has the capacity of 85 seats, is fully equipped with surveillance systems, the Tip Tap contactless fare payment system, a manual access ramp and can travel up to 260km

In addition to the 25 new buses, the operator is also introducing 32 retrofitted buses, rendering them the first company to deploy such vehicles within Italy and delivering on the largest European retrofit order to date.

Federico Tonetti, President of RATP Dev Italia, said:

The integration of these new electric buses and charging infrastructures marks a major step forward for sustainable urban mobility in Tuscany. Thanks to national and European funds, we are modernizing our fleet and creating innovative charging solutions.

Tuscany is now a showcase for RATP Dev in terms of sustainable transport, demonstrating our ability to collaborate effectively with local authorities to undertake ambitious public transit projects.

Autolinee Toscane has stated that the city of Florence will see the introduction of 53 additional electric buses by mid-2026, bringing its local electric bus fleet to 78 vehicles, as well as the development of a new 52-space charging infrastructure site in the Olmatello area.

The introduction of the new buses follows the initial delivery of 12 six-metre electric buses in January 2024.

The next Generation EU programme, which has been funded by the European Union, has been carried out in partnership with both the Tuscany Region and the Municipality of Florence, with Autolinee Toscane handling public funding, the launch of tenders, and the supervision of the construction of charging infrastructures.
