BAE Systems will supply 42 electric drive systems for a new fleet of hybrid-electric buses set to be delivered to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).
The systems will be integrated by manufacturer New Flyer, supporting San Francisco’s transition towards lower-emission public transport.

Earlier this year, SFMTA ordered 42 Xcelsior 40-foot hybrid-electric buses from New Flyer of America, a subsidiary of NFI Group.
These vehicles will be equipped with BAE Systems’ latest Gen3 electric drive system, designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The technology, which includes a traction motor, onboard energy storage, and smart-power electronics, forms a complete electric propulsion and accessory power solution for transit buses.
The Gen3 system incorporates silicon carbide components and a lightweight, compact design to increase electrical efficiency. Its modular architecture reduces the number of parts and connections, enhancing reliability and simplifying maintenance.
BAE Systems’ electric drive technology has been in use with SFMTA since 2007. The latest deployment continues this partnership with an updated system that supports hybrid operation while offering zero-emission capability.
The system also enables geofencing to allow automatic switching to electric-only mode in designated areas.
Bob Lamanna, vice president and general manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems said:BAE Systems’ Gen3 system will help the SFMTA achieve its goals by providing dependable, zero-emission capable technology. Hybrid buses equipped with our technology will deliver immediate benefits, such as reducing emissions and improving air quality, while advancing San Francisco toward a zero-emission transit system.
This technology is developed and supported at BAE Systems’ sites in Endicott, New York, and Rochester, UK. The company has over 19,000 propulsion systems in operation worldwide, spanning hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell applications.
