De Lijn is set to deploy six emission-free electric midi buses in Mechelen, Belgium.
Each vehicle is 8.5 metres long and will be deployed on city routes to enhance the area’s public transport.
This rollout is part of De Lijn’s broader plan to provide entirely emission-free public transport across Flanders by 2035.
De Lijn CEO Ann Schoubs said:With these brand new e-buses, we want to make public transport in Mechelen even more attractive for our passengers. As with our other e-buses, passengers will have access to mobile phone charging, up-to-date trip information on wide screens, and comfortable seating covered in recycled leather. Accessibility has also been improved with an electrically operated ramp for passengers with reduced mobility. Additionally, safety for passengers, pedestrians, and drivers is a priority. The buses are equipped with cameras instead of mirrors and include modern active and passive safety systems.
The new midi e-buses will primarily serve city line 1, running between Mechelen Station and Sint-Libertus on Nekkerspoel, with occasional services on other city lines.
The buses will be housed at the Elektriciteitsstraat depot, which has been equipped with the necessary charging infrastructure.
Mechelen’s Alderman for Mobility, Alexander Vandersmissen said:Many travellers have been looking forward to this. These new buses open the door to a new future for De Lijn in Mechelen. Technologically, they are a huge step forward, improving efficiency and driving comfort. If we want to encourage public transport use, we need a high-quality and comfortable fleet that adds value for citizens. We warmly welcome these buses. Alongside initiatives like more accessible bus stops, additional bus lanes, a new bus line to Malinas, and shopping tickets for De Lijn, we are making public transport more appealing in Mechelen.
