Busworld Innovation Award 2019 for AKASOL

AKASOL has received the renowned Innovation Award 2019 at the 25th Busworld exhibition in Brussels for its new AKASystem AKM CYC high-energy battery system.

The battery system was presented to the public for the first time at Busworld, the leading trade show of the European bus industry and has now been recognized as one of the most innovative products in the industry. The high energy solution sets new standards in terms of energy density and range.

The AKAModule CYC lithium-ion battery module which is built into this third-generation battery system achieves an energy density of about 221 Wh/kg, with the help of liquid-cooled and scalable battery modules which can be easily integrated at the system level, making it a leading product among liquid-cooled battery modules. AKASOL’s high-energy solution for long-distance applications is setting new standards for all bus applications in the field of energy density. For example, the solution will allow fully electric city and coach buses to have battery system capacities of between 600 and 1,000 kWh, depending on the size of the vehicle. This provides a storage capacity which is twice as high as the current generation battery.

CEO of AKASOL AG, Sven Schulz, said:

“We are very proud that this new battery system has allowed us to position ourselves as an innovation driver in the field of high-energy batteries and as the clear leader in energy density as far as current technologies are concerned.”

He noted that the serial order (for 2021) from a big commercial vehicle manufacturer which was received shortly after this new generation battery was developed and the great interest shown by various bus manufacturers at the exhibition demonstrate that the new product is the perfect solution for various long-distance applications and that it is suitable for use in coach buses as well as city buses.

Schulz explained:

“The new battery system contains our entire know-how in the field of high-energy solutions for the commercial vehicle market and our technology is now capable of meeting the customer requirements associated with around 95 percent of applications with respect to range and quick-charging capacity. The innovation award demonstrates once again that we are on the right track with the strategy we have adopted and that we are a vital partner for the electrification of commercial vehicles.”

Depending on mode of use and driving cycles, the new AKASystem CYC can achieve a range of up to 850 kilometers.

The AKASystem AKM CYC can be charged at a rate of up to 1C with quick charging and is also suitable for use in fast-charging infrastructure, up to maximum power of 500 kW. In order to achieve the high-energy density and the necessary charging and discharging power, AKASOL opted to use special 21700 cylindrical cells which were specially designed for professional and commercial applications with regard to useful life and cycle life. In doing so, AKASOL has been able to exceed the price-benefit ratio and availability of other competing technologies which are currently available, while at the same time increasing energy density by about 30-40%.

The Busworld “Innovation Label” is awarded to innovative products and services in the European bus segment. Eight other manufacturers were awarded this label in addition to AKASOL AG. Busworld Europe was held from October 17-23, 2019 as an international trade show. Busworld is the oldest and best-known bus trade show, with a history going back more than 40 years. This year, AKASOL presented three innovations from its portfolio of safe and high-performance lithium-ion battery systems for use in fully electric and hybrid city, regional and coach buses, including a battery system for fuel cell vehicles.
