BVG has begun preparations for the installation of a new network of up to 20 fast-charging stations at terminal stops throughout Berlin.

The addition of the new stations will allow buses to recharge during service, reducing the need to return to the depot.

BVG operates Germany’s biggest city bus fleet, which it aims to make completely electric and emission-free by 2030

Construction is now underway at the Schwarzelfenweg terminal stop in Pankow, as well as two S-Bahn stations, Kaulsdorf and Marzahn.

Patrick Schnieder, Federal Minister of Transport, said:

Electric buses are increasingly becoming a central component of climate-friendly public transport. However, due to the cost differences compared to conventional buses, the transition is a mammoth task for transport companies. With our funding, we are offsetting this difference and also supporting the development of the associated infrastructure.

With the STELLA project, the BVG is investing in modern infrastructure that makes bus charging even more suitable for everyday use. The BMV is supporting this with 12.1 million euros. The BVG has been proving for years that the transition works and is worthwhile – for companies, for citizens, and especially for the environment.

In total, the BMV is supporting the BVG on its path to an emission-free fleet with around 160 million euros.

The new station at Schwarzelfenweg is scheduled to begin operation in early 2026, with the next two following within a few weeks.

The STELLA project is set to receive a total of 12.1 million EUR in funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) as part of the Guideline for the Promotion of Alternative Drive Systems for Buses in Passenger Transport, with additional funding provided by the Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.
