NFI subsidiary, New Flyer Industries Canada, has received two firm orders from Durham Region Transit (DRT) to supply 43 new buses.
These orders include seven Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot battery-electric buses and 36 Xcelsior 40-foot clean-diesel buses.

DRT, one of Ontario’s largest regional transit systems, serves eight municipalities within the Durham region and connects to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The newly ordered vehicles will replace ageing units and support the expansion of DRT’s fleet to maintain service levels across the network.
Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI said:Since 1988, New Flyer has been a trusted partner to DRT, delivering safe, reliable, and accessible public transit solutions for their communities. This latest investment underscores our shared commitment to enhancing mobility and improving the passenger experience.
Through continuous innovation and strategic investments—like expanding our Winnipeg facility to support an all-Canadian bus manufacturing initiative—New Flyer is strengthening Canada’s transit ecosystem for future generations.
The battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses for this order will be among the first produced under New Flyer’s All-Canadian Build initiative. This project, backed by the Government of Manitoba and Prairies Economic Development Canada, aims to increase New Flyer’s production capacity by up to 240 units annually and generate 250 new jobs within Manitoba’s green economy.
New Flyer’s Xcelsior CHARGE NG bus includes several technological developments, including high-energy batteries, a redesigned protective battery housing for improved maintenance, and a lightweight electric traction system capable of recovering up to 90% of energy during braking.
Bill Holmes, General Manager at DRT said:These New Flyer buses will enhance the Durham Region Transit fleet to support our mission of delivering sustainable, efficient public transit services for the communities we serve.
