Chengdu has launched a new pilot project utilising an autonomous bus from CRRC Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd. (CRRC EV).
The project, which has been launched as a collaborative effort between the Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC EV, includes the operation of autonomous public buses in regular commercial services.

Vehicles included in the pilot consist of four 6-metre L4 autonomous minibuses developed and manufactured by CRRC EV.
All vehicles taking part in the pilot support both manual and driverless modes and feature a passenger capacity of up to 16 (seated). Onboard intelligent driving systems integrate a precision sensing matrix combining LiDAR and camera systems, a high-performance domain controller and AI capabilities for planning, control and BEV perception.
The vehicles are currently undergoing road tests and will be made available to residents in Chengdu shortly.
Chengdu Public Transport Group and CRRC EV’s partnership aims to both build a full lifecycle management and technology system for autonomous buses in commercial operation, as well as develop solutions and operational management systems that cover the entire process of operation including services, scheduling and command, inspection, maintenance and emergency response.
Together, the two companies have formulated China’s first guidelines for system integration testing of autonomous bus systems.
