Daimler Buses Spain has presented the new Mercedes-Benz OC 500 hybrid, expanding its chassis range with a 48-volt mild hybrid system intended for interurban, suburban, regional and school transport services.

The model is designed to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions without requiring changes to existing operating structures.

The OC 500 hybrid integrates a 48 V system that supports the internal combustion engine during high-demand phases such as start-up and initial acceleration, while recovering energy during braking. The process operates automatically and maintains a driving experience similar to that of a conventional vehicle.

According to Daimler Buses, the system can lower fuel use and emissions, particularly on routes with frequent stops: a common feature of interurban and regional services.

The chassis does not depend on charging infrastructure and can be deployed without additional driver or workshop training. Daimler Buses says this approach enables operators to pursue emissions reductions while limiting operational risk and capital expenditure.

The vehicle has received the ECO environmental label from Spain’s traffic authority, a designation that can support eligibility for subsidies, regulatory benefits and improved evaluation in public and school transport tenders.

The OC 500 hybrid range includes two configurations:

  • OC 500 LE 1930 hybrid (Low Entry): targeted at interurban routes with high passenger turnover, where accessibility and flexible interior layouts are required.
  • OC 500 RF 1936 hybrid (Raised Floor): intended for interurban and regional services focused on seated passengers and medium-distance travel.

Both versions can be homologated in Class I, II or III, depending on configuration and intended application.

The OC 500 hybrid incorporates safety features aligned with the General Safety Regulation, including advanced driver assistance systems derived from coach platforms. These systems are intended to support driver awareness and enhance protection for passengers and other road users.

Support services are provided through the OMNIplus network, which includes remote monitoring for three years and financing options via Daimler Truck Financial Services.

The OC 500 chassis family is manufactured at Daimler Buses’ facility in Sámano, Castro Urdiales. The plant specialises in chassis production and supplies multiple markets within Europe. The site’s focus allows adaptation to different operator requirements and supports employment and technical expertise in the region.

With the introduction of the OC 500 hybrid, Daimler Buses Spain adds a mild hybrid alternative to its portfolio, positioned as a transitional technology for operators seeking emissions reductions while maintaining established operational practices.
