Daimler Buses has been awarded a contract for the construction of a brand-new e-bus depot, including charging infrastructure, for Deuben-based operator Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH.

The development includes the provision of ten CCS2 charging points at the Zwenkau bus depot south of Leipzig, as well as both servicing and maintenance of the entire charging infrastructure for five years.

Daimler has also received an order from the operator for the supply of nine battery-electric eCitaro solo buses and all associated maintenance. These buses are set for delivery by the end of 2026.

The orders include an option for a further 17 charging points and 18 additional eCitaro vehicles.

Daimler will serve as a general contractor for the construction of the depot, and supply all components of the entire service package turnkey from a single source in cooperation with figures from Daimler Buses Solutions GmbH and their partners Schlender, Consass, ABB and Sinos.

Steffen Germ, CEO of Daimler Buses Solutions GmbH, said:

We listen to the customer and implement the individual charging infrastructure solution for them and with them. So, we are proud that we have also convinced Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH to order a complete tailor‑made solution that will prepare it for bus transport that will be CO2 free.

In order to finance the new e-bus depot, e-buses and associated services, Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH will be awarded funding of roughly 3.6 million EUR from both the Federal Republic of Saxony and the Free State of Saxony.

The new site in Zwenkau will feature eleven bus lanes with 20 electric bus parking spaces and associated charging bays. The depot will be fully equipped with Daimler Buses’ own transformer station, battery storage, photovoltaic system, power storage and charging infrastructure.

The maintenance and service contract between the two parties will include a 24/7 hotline for on-site services, spare parts, annual maintenance and electrical safety checks of all charging systems and chargers.

Whilst initial construction will see the implementation of ten charging points at the site, the depot will be configured from the outset to accommodate 20 charging points in the future.

Charging capacity will allow for the simultaneous charging of four eCitaro solo buses at a maximum length of 15 metres.

The battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eCitaro low-floor buses set to be supplied by Daimler will be painted white and feature the Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH design.

At a length of 12 metres; the buses will feature two entrance doors and have the capacity to carry up to 76 passengers (31 seated, 45 standing).

They will be equipped with modern assistance and safety systems, such as active emergency braking assistant Preventive Brake Assist 2, a manual folding ramp and a set of two special-use areas. Elsewhere, the buses will feature air conditioning, passenger information systems and ten USB sockets.

All buses will be supplied with Bus Data Centre software, which will allow Omniplus On connectivity services. Regionalbus Leipzig GmbH has stated it will carry out an Omniplus maintenance contract for the new vehicles, guaranteeing availability.
