Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has announced the procurement of 476 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses from GILLIG, a North American manufacturer.

This acquisition, supported by 103 million USD in federal grant funding, forms a key part of DART’s broader modernisation strategy under the DART Transform programme.

DART Transform is a long-term initiative aimed at enhancing the agency’s transit network through targeted investments in safety, reliability, and accessibility. A significant component of this programme involves replacing ageing vehicles with newer, more efficient models.

The addition of GILLIG’s CNG buses aligns with DART’s commitment to sustainability. These buses are designed to produce near-zero emissions while maintaining high levels of durability and reliability. They also feature advanced safety systems and upgraded passenger amenities to enhance the travel experience.

Dee Leggett, DART’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer said:

This significant fleet upgrade represents our unwavering commitment to transforming DART into a safer, cleaner, and more modern transit system for North Texas. Working with GILLIG allows us to provide a superior experience for our riders while advancing our sustainability goals. Together, we’re setting a new standard for mobility in the region.

DART serves more than 30 million passenger trips annually, and this investment in modern vehicles will help meet the evolving needs of its users while maintaining service reliability. The new buses are expected to enter service in North Texas by spring 2026, in time for the region’s role as a host location for the FIFA World Cup.

Bill Fay, GILLIG’s Vice President of Sales said:

We are honored to partner with DART on this transformative project. These CNG buses exemplify GILLIG's dedication to delivering safe, reliable, and cost-effective transit solutions that empower communities and enhance the passenger experience. We look forward to supporting DART in their mission to serve North Texas.
