The Mercedes-Benz eCitaro series has been awarded the German Sustainability Award 2026.
Commended for its ‘demonstrable contribution [to] decarbonisation and noise reduction in urban areas’; the Daimler Buses series was praised for its holistic mobility concept, which includes consulting and service offerings alongside the vehicles themselves.

A jury awarded the accolade following an evaluation of its impact in relation to resource conservation, reduced emissions, closed-loop systems, sustainable production methods, and its role as a model within the sustainable bus market.
Till Oberwörder, CEO of Daimler Buses, said:The German Sustainability Award 2026 is a significant recognition of our work on the eCitaro family and our eMobility consulting.
The eCitaro has been in series production since 2018 – and it proves daily in numerous European cities that locally CO₂-free urban transport is already a reality. We are continuously developing it further and supporting our customers with comprehensive consulting on their path to transformation.
This award motivates our entire team to continue driving the transformation of public transport in a pioneering and consistent manner.
The eCitaro series utilises a combination of battery-electric and fuel cell-based drives, as well as a modular battery system with energy content of 588 kWh for the solo bus and 686 kWh for the 18-metre articulated bus.
Mercedes-Benz’ latest iteration of the eCitaro, the NMC4, was unveiled at the UITP Summit 2025, and aims to offer 13% higher energy density and ranges of up to 600km.
