NJ TRANSIT has received the first of 175 new 40-foot buses as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme. The vehicles, manufactured by New Flyer, are scheduled to be delivered between now and June 2026.

The acquisition is part of the agency’s wider plan to replace or upgrade all ageing buses and rail cars by 2031. Since 2018, the organisation has authorised the purchase of more than 1,400 buses, representing an investment of over 1.7 billion USD.

DOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Francis O’Connor said:

Investing in new, reliable and accessible public transportation is essential for keeping New Jersey moving forward. Modernising the NJ TRANSIT fleet is a critical step toward creating a world-class transit network that meets the needs of riders today and for decades to come.

The new buses offer a number of features aimed at improving the passenger experience and operational safety. Passenger amenities include USB charging points at multiple seats, LED interior lighting, a low-floor design with ramps for easier boarding, and updated intercom systems for clearer announcements.

Safety measures include onboard and blind-spot cameras, as well as turn-warning systems designed to alert pedestrians.

With the latest order, NJ TRANSIT continues to work towards a consistent level of service and reliability across its statewide network.

NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kris Kolluri said:

Governor Murphy’s continued investment in public transportation is enabling us to deliver on our promise of a modern, reliable transit system. The arrival of these new buses marks another milestone toward our 2031 fleet modernization goal — and a better experience for every customer who rides with us.
