FlixBus has announced its entry into the Australian market, marking the company’s fifth continent of operation. The move is timed to coincide with Australia’s summer travel season and represents the latest step in Flix’s Asia-Pacific expansion efforts.

The company, headquartered in Munich, has gradually grown its long-distance bus and train services from its European beginnings to North America, Latin America, and India. Australia now joins this international network, with services set to launch using Flix’s established partnership model.

Flix’s approach is based on its asset-light business model, combining technology-led ticketing and scheduling with services operated by local bus partners. This framework has been applied in 44 countries to date. In Australia, the same method will be followed, with Flix providing booking platforms, customer service, and branding, while local operators manage vehicle provision and on-the-ground logistics.

The company has appointed Yvan Lefranc-Morin as Senior Managing Director for Australia. Lefranc-Morin, who has been with Flix for over a decade and has previously worked in France and the Benelux markets, is relocating to Sydney. He will lead the newly established Australian office and manage partnerships with transport operators.

According to industry projections, the Asia-Pacific intercity coach market is expected to see steady growth, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of 12.2% between 2023 and 2028. Flix sees Australia as both a standalone market opportunity and a key part of its wider regional strategy.

André Schwämmlein, CEO and co-founder of Flix said:

Australia has been on our radar for a long time, but the country’s unique geography meant it took us a bit longer to get there. However, the potential was always clear to us.

This milestone marks the next chapter in our global journey, following over a decade of proven success in Europe and North America, and continued strong growth across Latin America, and India.

Since its founding, Flix has transported over 500 million passengers and now connects more than 6,800 destinations globally.

No specific routes or schedules have been announced for Australia yet.
