In recent years, British bus and coach manufacturer Wrightbus has emphasised its global ambition. This includes the production of electric buses beyond its UK base through operations in Malaysia.

Wrightbus’ factory in Malaysia has been operational since 2015, but the company more recently invested 1 million GBP into the facility to modernise and enhance its capabilities. The factory now has the capacity to produce 600 buses each year and is fully EV-ready.

The first electric bus produced at the Malaysian factory rolled off the production line earlier this year. The 6×2 3-axle buses will fulfil orders for customers in markets such as Hong Kong and Singapore.

These operations allow Wrightbus to effectively serve major Southeast Asian markets, while continuing to support British businesses and supply chains. Indeed, chassis production for the Asian vehicles is completed entirely at Wrightbus’ Ballymena factory before being shipped to Malaysia.

Furthermore, in an interview with Bus-News, Wrightbus CEO Jean-Marc Gales emphasised that the buses built in Malaysia are solely for the local market, and the company would not manufacture vehicles there for shipment back to Europe and the UK.

As a result, Wrightbus’ overseas expansion does not diminish its role in supporting British industry. By keeping core engineering, research and development, and production in Ballymena, the company ensures that UK suppliers, skilled engineers, and manufacturing expertise remain central to its operations. British businesses continue to benefit from contracts for components, systems, and services that underpin every bus Wrightbus produces, whether it is destined for the UK, Europe, or Southeast Asia.

The global presence also strengthens the company’s resilience and reputation, which in turn safeguards domestic jobs. A financially robust Wrightbus can invest further in innovation, workforce development, and new technologies at home, including zero-emission bus solutions for UK cities.

Indeed, this week, the company also unveiled its Generation 2 Electroliner, which is recognised as the most efficient electric bus worldwide.
