Malaysia’s primary public transport operator, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, has outlined plans to procure more than 1,100 electric buses nationwide between 2025 and 2030, marking a significant step in the country’s push towards greener urban mobility.

The move forms part of Prasarana’s Sustainability Blueprint and aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims to reduce carbon emissions and accelerate the electrification of public transport.

Under the blueprint, the operator is targeting a 45 percent reduction in operational carbon emissions by 2030 through a combination of vehicle electrification, solar energy adoption and energy efficiency measures.

Prasarana confirmed that it will acquire 310 diesel-engine buses as its final purchase of internal combustion vehicles, before transitioning fully to electric buses by 2037. Delivery of this last batch of diesel buses is expected by March next year.

The planned electric-bus procurement will be in addition to 150 electric feeder buses designated for the upcoming LRT Shah Alam Line (LRT3). Prasarana already operates electric buses on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Sunway line, where 15 electric buses are currently in service.

Beyond fleet electrification, the operator is expanding its use of renewable energy across its infrastructure. Solar panels were installed in 2023 at the BRT Sunway station and six other stations, with further installations planned over the next three years. These will involve approximately 75 rail and bus depots, transport hubs and stations nationwide.

The initiatives reflect a broader commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient public transport, extending beyond vehicles alone. Planned investments also include improved pedestrian walkways, more accessible bus stops and better-integrated transport hubs, aimed at enhancing the overall passenger experience.
