MAN Truck & Bus recently held a topping-out ceremony for its new battery production facility in Nuremberg, Germany.
The 100 million EUR investment will enable large-scale production of high-voltage batteries for fully electric trucks and buses starting in April 2025.
With this site, MAN is set to become the first commercial vehicle manufacturer in Germany to produce its own batteries at scale.
The 17,000-square-metre facility will house over 50 manual and automated assembly stations and seven test benches. It will produce up to 50,000 batteries annually in its first phase, with potential expansion to 100,000 batteries per year by 2030. Production methods such as laser welding cells will ensure precision and quality in battery assembly.
Almost 350 jobs will be created at the facility, further solidifying Nuremberg as a hub for advanced vehicle technologies.
The facility’s development has been supported by a 30 million EUR investment from Bavaria, alongside collaboration with the Technical University of Munich for ongoing research into next-generation battery technology.
Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus said:The drives of the future are being created in Nuremberg. Not only are we developing batteries here, but in a few months' time we will also be using the latest technologies to mass-produce them. The topping-out ceremony is an important milestone for our company on the road to the major transformation towards electromobility.
The new facility aligns with MAN’s broader strategy to transition from traditional combustion engines to electric drive systems. It complements the recent delivery of MAN’s first eTruck to a customer.
