The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has announced a slew of initiatives set to transform public transit networks throughout Atlanta at its recent State of MARTA event.
As part of plans to modernise its network, the operator announced the introduction of new bus lines, vehicles and more, with improvements looking to future-proof the region’s public transport ahead of an expected population boom from 6 to 8 million by 2050.
At its State of MARTA event, the Authority announced a redesign of its NextGen Bus Network, with frequent service routes set to increase from 5 to 18 corridors, expanding its 15-minute service to 245% more riders. The redesign will also see the introduction of a consistent seven-day service, as well as 12 on-demand zones for more underserved areas in the region.
The operator also unveiled a set of new zero-emission vehicles for use on its MARTA Rapid Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines, all of which will be equipped with custom interiors, wireless charging and ADA-friendly user platforms, with a debut set for the Summerhill corridor later in 2025.
Fare payment procedures are planned to receive extensive upgrades, with the new AFC 2.0 system expanding to allow riders to pay for their journey with credit cards, smartphones and smartwatches.
Work is also currently underway on the MARTA Rapid Summerhill line, which aims to ease transport through the region’s more congested areas with additional lines along Campbellton Road, Southlake and SR-54.
MARTA Board Chair, Jennifer Ide, said:The future is now, and it’s happening at MARTA.
We are breaking ground, launching innovative services, and expanding our system to meet the needs of our growing region. Together, we’re building a brighter, more connected future for metro Atlanta.
MARTA also announced several improvements set for the region’s rail network, unveiling its new CQ400 railcars at the event.
