The state of Jalisco has ordered 53 new Volvo electric buses for the Guadalajara metropolitan area. This represents a further step in Mexico’s efforts to modernise urban mobility and reduce emissions from public transport.

The order comprises 31 high-floor LUMINUS buses built on the Volvo BZR chassis, 12 low-floor LUMINUS buses on the Volvo BZL chassis, and 10 articulated Volvo 7800 Electric models.

All vehicles will be produced in Mexico, a decision expected to support local employment and strengthen the national supply chain.

Deliveries will begin in December 2025 with the introduction of the first 12 low-floor units, while the remaining buses are due to enter service by May 2026. The full fleet is scheduled to be operational before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Preliminary estimates suggest the new electric fleet will cut CO₂ emissions by more than 35% compared with equivalent diesel buses, amounting to an annual saving of roughly 140 tonnes.

The buses are designed primarily for city operation. They will charge overnight, with the option of daytime top-up charging through CS2 connections to maintain service during extended operating hours.

Unlike some previous Volvo projects that have included full turnkey packages, this order focuses solely on the delivery of vehicles. However, Volvo Buses will continue to provide operational support through its existing national service network.

The new fleet builds on Guadalajara’s earlier collaboration with Volvo, which supplied articulated buses for the city’s first bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor 15 years ago.

Rafael Kisel, Managing Director of Volvo Buses Mexico said:

The proven quality and durability of Volvo Buses products are among the key reasons Guadalajara has once again chosen our solutions, demonstrated by the fleet of Volvo articulated buses that inaugurated the city’s first BRT corridor 15 years ago. However, the decisive factor this time is that field tests confirmed that the performance of our electric buses is better than others, primarily in energy consumption and range – in addition to the support we guarantee to ensure uptime through our service network.
