New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has ordered 265 battery-electric buses from New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (NFI).
This latest purchase builds on a contract established in early 2024 and includes 193 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 40-foot buses and 72 Xcelsior CHARGE NG 60-foot articulated buses.

The MTA, which operates the largest bus fleet in the United States, serves a population of 15.3 million across New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The agency has committed to transitioning its entire fleet of approximately 5,800 buses to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. This shift is part of a broader initiative to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions by 85% within the same timeframe, using 2015 as a baseline.
Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI said:Our 25 year partnership with the MTA has been built on trust, innovation, and delivering reliable transportation solutions. This builds upon MTA’s original firm order of 205 Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses.
MTA announced its purchase of an additional 265 battery-electric buses in January. New Flyer has now confirmed this order, revealing that the models will be Xcelsior CHARGE NG units.
The Xcelsior CHARGE NG model integrates high-energy batteries, an advanced protective battery packaging system designed for simplified serviceability, and a lightweight electric traction drive system capable of recovering up to 90% of braking energy. These features are intended to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
