Norfolk County Council and First Bus have officially introduced Tap On Tap Off (TOTO) payment technology on 88 buses across Norfolk.

The addition of the technology was made possible by a 42,000 GBP funding injection given to each of Norfolk’s bus operators in order to install the readers, which was in turn provided by the Department for Transport for the delivery of Norfolk’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

Funding for the upgrades comes from an allocation of £300,000 provided through the Local Authority Bus Grant Capital Funding

Allowing travellers to switch to entirely contactless payment methods; the TOTO contactless system charges for any journey made but is capped at the price for a day’s travel, allowing multiple trips to be made with discounts for more days travelled during a week.

James McCluskey, Commercial Director of First East of England, said:

This technology will give access to the best-value fares and benefit the hundreds of thousands of people who travel with us across the region every week.

In order to use the system; travellers must use their contactless card or mobile device (including smartwatches) at the ticket machine when boarding the bus and then once more when leaving the vehicle to confirm a record of the trip.

New signage has been installed inside each local bus to highlight TOTO, with the card reader having been installed in such a position as to remind customers of the payment option.
