The Welsh Government has announced than over two million bus journeys have been taken by young people across the country since the introduction of the 1 GBP bus fare scheme last September.

Running until the end of August 2026; the scheme offers young people aged between 5–21 a single fare for 1 GBP, as well as day tickets for 3 GBP on any participating bus service.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates said:

It’s fantastic to see so many young people taking advantage of cheaper bus fares.

We know that the cost of travel is often a barrier for young people, especially in rural areas, so I am delighted that our investment is making travel as accessible and affordable as possible with the scheme already making a real difference to young people's lives across Wales.

Funding for the scheme has been provided by the Welsh Government, which has supplied a grant of 22 million GBP over a course of two financial years (2025-2026 & 2026-2027) toward its operation. This also includes a 15 million GBP grant secured through the budget agreement with the Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, Jane Dodds.
