The Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) has announced a partnership with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to trial a number of transit solutions that aim to improve safety, reliability and overall customer experience.

A new expansion of the OVIN Technology Pilot Zones will allow Ontario-based companies to pilot their new technologies directly within the TTC network.

The partnership hopes to allow southern Ontario companies the opportunities to integrate technologies into real-world situations in buses, stations and supporting infrastructure, with each company set to receive up to 100,000 CAD to pilot a series of use cases showcasing the solution’s ability to address urban mobility challenges.

Built on a previous commitment to expedite the commercialisation of automotive and mobility technologies in southern Ontario; the expansion forms part of the OVIN Technology Pilot Zones program, which was first launched in February 2024 with an 8 million CAD investment courtesy of the Government of Canada through FedDev Ontario.

Honourable Evan Solomon, Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), said:

By investing in real-world testing environments like the OVIN Technology Pilot Zones, our government is helping Ontario companies turn bold ideas into market-ready solutions.

This partnership with the TTC is an example of how the Government of Canada is supporting the acceleration of innovation in urban mobility, contributing to stronger domestic supply chains and helping create the conditions to enable our businesses to demonstrate their innovative technologies and grow globally.

The new Pilot Zones are expected to play a crucial role in the progression of the TTC’s ongoing efforts to both strengthen its operations and improve overall rider experience, as well as connect local companies with real-world solutions.
