The SamTrans Board of Directors has approved two contracts with Trillium USA Company, LLC to design, construct, commission and maintain its new permanent hydrogen fuelling station.
The station, which is currently being developed at its North Base facility in South San Francisco, will aid in the support of SamTrans’ expanding fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs).

The contract with Trillium involves 17.7 million USD for the design, construction and commissioning of the fuelling facility, and up to 2.97 million USD for maintenance services over a projected five-year term.
Board of Directors Chair Jeff Gee, said:Every step we take toward a zero-emission fleet is a step toward cleaner air and healthier communities.
This fueling station enables us to scale up responsibly while ensuring reliable service for our riders today and for future generations. The Board is committed to positioning SamTrans as a regional leader in clean transportation.
The station’s delivery falls in line with SamTrans’ Innovative Clean Transit Plan, which outlines a phased approach to replace diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles with zero-emission alternatives.
At present, SamTrans has claimed that its interim hydrogen fuelling setup does not offer sufficient capacity to serve its incoming fleet, with a new, permanent station set to ensure sufficient infrastructure for future FCEB deployment.
Currently, 89% of the District’s greenhouse gas emissions are caused by diesel buses, however the District has committed to replacing 115 of its diesel buses with FCEBs.
Design work on the new fuelling station is set to begin later this year, with full operation expected by autumn 2027.
