Scania has launched a set of brand-new combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains for use in buses and coaches.

The manufacturer’s new powertrain platform is based on the Supertruck engine and comes in both internal combustion and plug-in hybrid configurations, allowing for reduced fuel consumption and zero-emission zone compliance.

The new powertrain comes in both a combustion and plug-in hybrid variant

Scania has stated that its new Scania Super combustion powertrain is its most efficient, cost-effective and long-lasting to date.

The powertrain offers fuel savings of up to 8% when compared with the equivalent current powertrain, cutting potential cost of operation as well as CO2 emissions, with savings enabled by a new 13-litre engine and new variant of the Scania Opticruise gearbox.

The unit has also been configured to comply with the Euro 7 emissions legislation, and is expected to last for two million kilometres.

All engine filters have been placed on the ‘cold’, non-turbo side of the unit.

Scania’s new plug-in hybrid electric option (PHEV) has been designed for long-distance operations, allowing for zero-emission zone compliance and offering lower fuel consumption and emission costs.

The PHEV features an integrated e-machine and six-speed powershift gearbox, and is capable of running in four different modes: electric, hybrid, charge sustain and forced charging.

With an electric range of up to 80 kilometres on a single charge, the PHEV has an electric power output of 290 kilowatts.

Operators can also choose to utilise the unit’s Scania Zone geofencing technology to automate the transition to and from electric mode.

Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania, said:

Our new combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains are shining examples of Scania’s twin commitment to sustainability and profitability for bus and coach customers.

With these new powertrains, we will be able to provide long-distance bus and coach operators with incredibly competitive solutions, regardless of their specific needs or which particular challenges they face, meeting both their current and future business needs.
