Sound Transit has broken ground on a new transit centre in Renton, Washington, which will support the future Stride S1 bus rapid transit line and local bus services.
The S1 fleet will include 33 Enviro500EV electric double-decker buses built by Alexander Dennis. The buses will operate at intervals of 10 to 15 minutes for more than 17 hours per day.

The route will mainly use high-occupancy vehicle lanes and dedicated transit infrastructure to link East and South King County. It will also connect with Link light rail services at Bellevue and Tukwila, including Tukwila International Boulevard Station for airport journeys.

Plans for the new transit centre include eight bus bays, covered waiting areas and a four-way signalised junction to manage bus movements. A bus-only lane will be added on the northbound shoulder of State Route 167. The scheme also provides for new pavements, lighting, multi-use paths, an extension of the two-way cycle lane along Shattuck Avenue, and stormwater treatment features and planting.

Sound Transit said Stride S1 services and the new Renton Transit Center are scheduled to open in 2028. Local officials said the project is intended to improve regional connections and support access to jobs and services across the corridor.
