Empresa Municipal de Transportes Urbanos de Gijón (EMTUSA) has awarded a contract to Irizar e-mobility for the supply of four fully electric buses.

The agreement involves the delivery of 12-metre Irizar ie bus models, with the vehicles expected to enter service within 11 months.

The electric buses will operate on Line 10, which runs between Pumarín and Hospital de Cabueñes, crossing Gijón from west to east. The route is one of the city’s busiest, carrying more than 2.8 million passengers annually.

The vehicles are designed for urban operations and support charging capacities of up to 150 kW. They can be recharged via an inverted pantograph or using a Combo 2 plug connection at depot facilities.

Accessibility has been prioritised in the design, with double ramps, dedicated wheelchair or pram spaces, and designated seating for passengers with reduced mobility.

Incorporating the GSR2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) standard, the buses also include cybersecurity features intended to safeguard vehicle operations and communications.

This order forms part of EMTUSA’s broader plan to modernise its fleet between 2024 and 2027.
