The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced details on specific dates for bus timetabling changes set to take effect as part of the the Queens Bus Network Redesign project.

The new bus network is set to be implemented across two distinct phases, both of which will align with the regular seasonal timetable changes on Sunday, 29 June, and Sunday, 31 August.

MTA Chair & CEO Janno Lieber, NYCT President Demetrius Crichlow, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and NYC DOT Assistant Commissioner Diniece Mendes announce the two-phase implementation of the Queens Bus Network Redesign at Queens Borough Hall on Monday, Apr 7, 2025
(Marc A. Hermann / MTA)

Phase One of the redesign will see 16 new routes launched, 67 routes altered and five routes discontinued entirely, with Phase Two introducing one new route, 37 route changes and one route discontinuation.

In total, the final plan includes 124 routes (an increase of 11 from the current 113), with 94 local routes and 30 express routes across the borough.

Signage is currently being installed across the existing bus network to alert passengers of the impending redesign, with notices placed in existing Guide-A-Ride (GAR) boxes throughout Queens. On-board service announcements will also begin to notify passengers of the changes, and a series of pop-up outreach events are planned to take place in the coming months before implementation.

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, said:

800,000 Queens residents depend on our buses every day, and we owe it to them to find new ways to speed service.

No matter what else is going on in New York right now, the new MTA is listening to our customers and delivering bus speed improvements – whether it’s by transformative redesign of the bus network, Automated Camera Enforcement, or congestion pricing.

Passengers can find information on dates and new routes from the MTA’s website, which now contains a custom-made Route Look Up Tool that enable customers to view information on their chosen routes in their preferred language, as well as offer information on upcoming trips and relevant information.
