NFI Group Inc. (NFI) subsidiary, Motor Coach Industries (MCI), has shipped the first battery-electric bus constructed in its facility in Pembina, North Dakota.

The first of nine all-electric coaches; the shipment follows the company’s announcement in November 2023 that it would be committing to operations in the state going forward following an announced June 2025 plant closure date, which has since been delayed indefinitely.

The assembly plant had previously been set to cease operations by June of 2025
Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, NFI said:

We are pleased to see these first electric coaches come off the assembly line in Pembina following a significant investment in training and infrastructure to support the transition to zero-emission.

Thank you to the over 120 team members at Pembina for your determination and dedication to MCI over the past few years and I look forward to welcoming more team members as we continue to service our customers.

The plant, which was retained after careful deliberations regarding NFI’s North American footprint, has since seen major investments made in both labour and infrastructure, including extensive staff training as well as new chargers, storage areas and commissioning areas.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, said:

As a major manufacturer and employer in northeast North Dakota, Motor Coach Industries’ investment in the Pembina facility is great news for the region, our state’s economy and the hardworking North Dakotans who keep MCI on the industry’s cutting edge.

Innovation drives our economy, and we congratulate MCI and NFI Group on achieving this significant milestone, setting the company up for further success in the future.
