Volvo Buses has unveiled a range of new and updated active safety systems to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability in public transportation.
These active safety systems will help drivers to drive safely and avoid situations that could result in accidents. The range includes several features with a focus on the protection of vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.
This offering of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) exceeds the new EU regulations, as well as the legal requirements of most non-EU countries.
Volvo Buses’ new and updated active safety systems include:
Collision Warning with Emergency Brake
This system alerts the driver to potential collisions with vehicles and pedestrians, initiating pre-braking followed by full braking if necessary. It is applicable for Class III vehicles.
Side Collision Avoidance Support
Constantly monitoring both sides of the bus, this system warns the driver of potential collisions, particularly when turning and when electric scooters approach the bus’s side.
Front Short Range Assist
Operating at low speeds or standstill, this system scans the area in front of the vehicle, detecting vulnerable road users and warning the driver of potential collisions.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Using sensors to scan the lane ahead, this system adjusts the bus’s speed and distance to maintain a safe following distance from slower-moving vehicles.
Lane Keeping Support
This feature assists the driver in staying within the lane by recognising lane markings and providing visual and haptic alerts if unintentional drifting occurs.
Lane Change Support
Monitoring both sides of the vehicle, this system facilitates lane changes by alerting the driver to vehicles in adjacent lanes and potential collision risks.
Intelligent Speed Assistance
This feature informs the driver of current speed limits and road restrictions by recognizing applicable road signs and displaying them in the instrument cluster.
Driver Alert Support
Continuously monitoring lateral movement and steering wheel input, this system alerts the driver to signs of insufficient focus or drowsiness, displayed in the instrument cluster.
Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
This system detects and notifies the driver of low tyre pressure, which is crucial for maintaining good vehicle handling and safety.
These features will all come as standard on electric and Euro 6 Volvo buses and coaches.
