Volvo Buses has secured a contract to deliver 106 electric buses for operation in both Västmanland and Örebro counties, Sweden.

The order, which was made by Svealandstrafiken, builds on an initial purchase of 60 Volvo 8900 Electric and 13 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses, with the transport operator opting to secure an additional 33 Volvo 7900 Articulated buses.

The new order builds on an initial purchase of 60 Volvo 8900 Electric and 13 Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated buses

Delivery for the Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated and Volvo 8900 Electric units are expected to begin in 2026 and 2027, respectively, with each new vehicle joining Svealandstrafiken’s existing fleet of 17 Volvo electric buses already in operation throughout Västerås.

Predominantly, the company’s 7900 units are set to operate along city traffic routes in Örebro, with the 8900 units entering operation throughout regional routes in both Västmanland and Örebro.

Martin Spjern, Market Manager Sweden, Volvo Buses, said:

We are particularly pleased to have received a major order for our new intercity bus, the Volvo 8900 Electric. It will enable us to offer efficient, sustainable and quiet transportation not only in cities but also between cities.

For Svealandstrafiken, this is more than just an order for electric buses though. They have a holistic perspective where social sustainability and service network have also been important factors in their choice of partner for the electrification of city and regional traffic.

The Volvo 8900 Electric is built on the company’s BZR electromobility platform, which allows customers to switch combinations of batteries and charging to fit traffic needs as necessary.

The new vehicles are set to be manufactured at Volvo Buses’ production facilities in Borås and Uddevalla, Sweden, with the bodies arranged to be manufactured by Volvo Buses’ partner MCV at its production facility in Egypt, which is currently in development.

Thomas Nylund, VP, Cluster Europe, Volvo Buses, said:

The order for 106 electric buses from Svealandstrafiken shows that we have chosen the right path in the strategic change we have implemented in Europe. Together with our partners, we will continue to develop solutions for public transport, and through our collaborations with external bodybuilders, we can also adapt our offer, depending on the customer and market.
