Arriva has introduced 21 new electric buses in the Madrid region, alongside the electrification of its second depot in Móstoles.

This rollout is part of a 20 million EUR investment aimed at further decarbonising operations in the Spanish capital.

The new buses will provide sustainable public transport to Móstoles and Alcorcón, serving around 400,000 residents across both areas.

Following the electrification of its first depot in Alcorcón, Arriva’s latest investment ensures that Móstoles, a city located just outside Madrid, is now fully served by zero-emission vehicles.

The buses will operate from a newly upgraded depot capable of charging 22 electric vehicles simultaneously.

The depot is also designed to accommodate future fleet expansion, with potential capacity for up to 44 vehicles.

Sian Leydon, Managing Director for Mainland Europe at Arriva Group, said:

This is great news for our passengers and the communities we serve in and around Madrid. We’re investing to decarbonise our operations, improve air quality and reduce noise pollution in Spain’s biggest and busiest city. By expanding our zero-emission fleet and electrifying a second depot to serve Madrid, not only are we supporting the city’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030, but we’re delivering modern, safe and comfortable forms of public transport which we hope will encourage more people to opt for buses instead of cars.

The new fleet of electric buses, manufactured by BYD and adapted by Spanish coachbuilder Castrosua, were officially introduced during a ceremony in Móstoles, attended by representatives from the Community of Madrid’s passenger transport authority, Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM).

The buses feature enhanced accessibility, including wider aisles and low floors for improved kerbside access. They are also equipped with on-board amenities such as Wi-Fi and advanced air conditioning.

The 12-metre buses can travel up to 300 km on a single charge, while the 13-metre models are capable of covering 450 km, making them ideal for longer routes.
