BC Transit has announced a new fleet acquisition strategy, focusing on the addition of over 900 buses to its fleet within the next five years.

Of the buses planned to be purchased, BC Transit will aim to incorporate a mix of both lower carbon fuel type and traditional propulsion vehicles in order to meet local demands for increased public transport services.

The new strategy is hoped to aid the company in achieving GHG emissions targets set by the Province of British Columbia — 40 per cent reduction in bus emissions by 2030 and 60 per cent by 2040

The company recently received funding for the acquisition of 141 electric buses, including 125 heavy duty, 10 double decker, and six light duty, with the heavy duty vehicles currently on order and set to be supplied by both New Flyer and Nova Bus.

As well as the move toward a more sustainable fleet, BC Transit is also in the process of acquiring an extra 80 diesel powered double decker vehicles order to meet more immediate local demands for increased public transport services, and will continue to utilise Hydrogenated Derived Renewable Diesel (HDRD), a low-emission fuel source capable for use in diesel engines.

Finally, the company is also planning to purchase 105 heavy duty hybrid buses, as well as a number of light duty petrol buses to support handyDART services.
