Clean Energy has been awarded a contract for the design and construction of a new hydrogen fuelling station for the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA) in California.

The contract, which also includes the supply of both hydrogen and maintenance services for the newly announced station, will enable RTA to begin operation of an initial set of five fuel cell buses, with plans to grow its fleet to well over 100 hydrogen-powered vehicles by 2035.

Riverside Transit Agency’s current fleet of CNG buses
Chad Lindholm, Senior Vice President of Clean Energy, said:

Being awarded another hydrogen station is a testament to Clean Energy’s leadership and expertise in the hydrogen fueling space. Partnering with the forward-thinking team at Riverside Transit is a great feather in our hat as they transition, expand and diversify to other clean, low emissions technologies.

Hydrogen offers a reliable solution for long routes and this new station will support RTA’s goals to serve their community cleanly for years to come.

The hydrogen fuelling station marks Clean Energy’s second foray into hydrogen building, having previously completed its first build for Foothill Transit Agency in Pomona, California, in June 2023.

Alongside the new station; RTA recently announced the intention to purchase five 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell electric buses, following the receipt of a 5.1 millions USD grant awarded by the US Department of Transportation, marking the beginning of the company’s transition to a zero-emission fleet starting in 2026.

Jeremy Smith, Board Chair at Riverside Transit Agency, said:

This project reflects our commitment to fostering healthier communities by advancing clean energy solutions and is a critical milestone as we move to a zero-emission vehicle fleet.

We are driving innovation while addressing the need for environmentally responsible solutions.
