Bus manufacturer ENC and wireless charging firm InductEV have announced a collaboration to increase the availability of battery-electric buses equipped with high-power wireless charging systems across the United States and Canada.

Under the partnership, ENC will integrate InductEV’s inductive charging technology into its battery-electric bus offerings. This will allow municipal transit agencies to deploy electric buses that can charge wirelessly during operations, potentially reducing downtime and maintenance demands.

ENC’s all-electric Axess EVO-BE bus will be the first to include InductEV’s system as standard equipment. The EVO-BE, available in 32-, 35-, and 40-foot lengths, is built on a common platform that also supports hybrid, diesel, and CNG configurations.

The manufacturer states that the inclusion of wireless charging will offer transit agencies additional flexibility in addressing operational and infrastructure planning needs.

John F. Rizzo, President and CEO at InductEV said:

ENC is poised to become a major force in North American transit by embracing proven technology and delivering next-generation zero-emission buses with the advantages of wireless inductive charging. ENC’s track record, combined with InductEV’s wireless charging technology, reinforces its leadership position in sustainable public transportation.

InductEV’s system uses in-ground pads to transmit power wirelessly to receivers mounted under the vehicle. The technology delivers up to 450 kW of power and is compatible with a range of vehicle types, including low-floor, paratransit, and double-decker buses.

The company reports that the system has been used for over 3 million miles of operation, with more than 3 GWh of electricity delivered to vehicles in service.

Dan Trujillo, ENC’s Vice President of Sales said:

We’ve been following InductEV’s municipal transit deployments across the US and look forward to adding its high-power wireless charging solution to meet the varied needs of our customers. InductEV’s system creates stability, flexibility, and ease of use. Their proven deployments in transit fleets, with over 3 million miles driven and over 3 GWh of power delivered wirelessly, makes them a reliable provider for our new product line.
