First Bus has become the first operator in the UK to establish a charging hub for the local community at its bus depot in Summercourt, Cornwall.

The First Bus site will offer eight rapid charging facilities for electric cars and vans, which the community can use on a pay-as-you-go basis.

The chargers will also be available for local businesses, following successful First Bus pilots in Glasgow and Leicester.

This hub will provide the local area with charging infrastructure, while also future-proofing First Bus’ business at the Summercourt depot. Ultimately, the operator hopes to electrify all its depots and transition the First Bus fleet to electric vehicles by 2035.

Preparation works are now underway on site, and the hub is expected to be fully operational and open to the public later this summer.

First Bus Chief Sustainability Officer, Isabel McAllister said:

We’re proud to be leading the way with this industry first for consumer electric charging. We want to help the communities we serve with their own transition to zero emissions transport solutions.

We believe this is the right thing to do. By futureproofing sites like Summercourt, we are proud to be progressing our net zero journey and investing in a greener future for our local communities.
