The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced the beginning of a new set of Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) areas on 14 bus routes across Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx.
The programme is an expansion of the previous Automated Bus Lane Enforcement (ABLE) programme, and utilises the former project’s numerous cameras situated throughout the city to automatically capture bus lane violations, double parking and bus stop rules in real-time.
The MTA has claimed that it has seen bus lanes speeds increase by up to 5% with cameras in enforcement, as well as a 20% reduction in collisions and a 5-10% reduction in emissions.
“Keeping bus stops clear is critical to ensuring all of our customers can safely get on and off the bus.
“I know firsthand the frustrating experience of having a vehicle block the bus stop and forcing me to wait for the next one. I am thrilled to be turning on ACE today and look forward to clearer bus stops and faster trips.”
As part of the expansion, all 623 buses operating along the 14 routes have been updated with new artificial intelligence (AI) enforcement technology to allow drivers to identify the new enforcement at bus stops and double-parked locations.
