US: SFMTA to Modernise Potrero Yard Bus Facility

The Mayor of San Francisco, London Breed and the Board of Supervisors have approved legislation to enable the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) to move forward with the Potrero Yard Modernization Project.

This project will replace the Potrero Yard bus facility with a modern depot to store and maintain electric trolleybuses.

The new site could also include up to 465 units of housing above and beside the transit infrastructure. This would combine a working bus facility with affordable housing.

Thanks to these latest approvals, SFMTA can now work on establishing the final designs for the site.

Potrero Yard was built in 1915 to serve 100 streetcars. The new facility will be designed to:

  • Provide capacity for 54% more electric trolley buses
  • Improve efficiency with maintenance and repairs
  • Dedicate more space and tools for SFMTA staff to keep Muni running
  • Establish affordable and workforce housing

SFMTA has worked closely with the community to establish its current plans and continues to welcome feedback as the project moves forward.
