The North County Transit District (NCTD) has ordered six battery-electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG transit buses from NFI.
The forty-foot battery-electric buses will transport passengers in North San Diego County, California.
This is NCTD’s first order of battery-electric buses from NFI. The order was supported by funding from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to assist NCTD in operating a fleet that is zero emission at the tailpipe by 2040.
The Xcelsior CHARGE NG features high-energy batteries that extend the vehicle’s range by up to 13 percent. In addition, its lightweight electric traction drive system offers up to 90 percent energy recovery.
Chris Stoddart, President, North American Bus and Coach, NFI said:Having delivered over 270 buses to NCTD since 1997, we are now enabling NCTD’s transition from low-emission to zero-emission by 2040. It is exciting to build on our 25-year partnership by turning the corner on the new mobility era. With our next generation electric bus, we are providing longer range, better energy recovery, and simpler serviceability to agencies across California.
Last year, NCTD also received a 4 million USD grant to construct a hydrogen fuelling station for up to 50 fuel-cell electric buses.
