Optibus’s software has been selected as the planning and scheduling system for Lagos’ Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network.
In collaboration with CapitalCore, this move will deliver Nigeria’s first AI-driven BRT, transforming mass transit in Lagos.
Lagos has a population of 16 million and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. Its rapid urban expansion has led to congestion and pollution, with daily traffic lasting up to three hours. Despite this, 52% of households do not own a car, highlighting the need for better public transport.
Currently, the city’s infrastructure struggles to handle traffic, causing significant delays and contributing to pollution. What’s more, its fragmented, unregulated transport sector, dominated by private operators of minibuses and midi-buses, lacks reliable routes and timetables.
Optibus’ integration, facilitated by CapitalCore’s intelligent transportation system (ITS), aims to transform Lagos’ public transport, enabling the BRT system to play a key role in addressing these challenges.
Lagos BRT, launched in 2008 as Africa’s first BRT system, currently serves 4.5 million passengers annually. To improve efficiency, Lagos plans to reduce waiting times and add 2,000 new buses to its network, aiming to boost ridership and ease traffic.
Optibus’ software will enable Lagos’ BRT to shift to a fully digital platform, powered by artificial intelligence. The use of cloud computing and automation will help operational teams evaluate service plans more quickly and effectively, supporting the city’s goal to increase ridership and reduce emissions.
Amos Haggiag, CEO and co-founder of Optibus said:Effective public transportation is a key enabler of sustainable urban development that benefits people, economies, and the environment. Optibus’ software is poised to set a new standard for mobility innovation in Nigeria, introducing technologies that will make passenger transport in Lagos State a precedent in the region.
By integrating Optibus’ system, Lagos will improve service quality and efficiency. The platform will offer real-time insights into key metrics such as vehicle usage and on-time performance, improving decision-making and operational coordination.
This rollout builds on Optibus’ experience in cities like Rio de Janeiro and Kampala and is expected to set a new standard for public transport in Africa.
Endurance Umenzeh-Nwauwah, Managing Director, CapitalCore said:The roll-out of Optibus’ software at the Lagos BRT will demonstrate the impact of new optimisation technologies in the region and improve access to these tools not only in Nigeria, but across other African nations.
