NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors has approved the purchase of 208 new 60-foot articulated buses and 20 battery electric buses as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme.
This investment will replace outdated 40-foot vehicles currently in service in New Jersey.

The articulated buses, designed with a pivoting joint to enable greater manoeuvrability, will nearly double onboard passenger capacity from 50 to 100.
Emissions from these new articulated buses are also projected to be around 80% lower than those of the models they replace.
Meanwhile, the electric buses will further contribute to the agency’s goal of achieving a 100% zero-emission fleet by 2040, in line with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s Energy Master Plan.
NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kris Kolluri said:Replacing outdated buses and rail cars across our system is part of our continued commitment to improving service for our customers — and today’s Board action is a meaningful step forward.
Governor Murphy’s FY2026 budget continues to prioritise transit, giving NJ TRANSIT the ability to accelerate advancing a modern, more reliable fleet that will better accommodate growing ridership and significantly enhance the customer experience.
Both the articulated and electric buses will feature low-floor designs to improve boarding times and accessibility. Each vehicle will be equipped with USB charging ports, security and blind spot cameras, and turn warning systems to enhance passenger safety and convenience.
The procurement, including spare parts, is estimated to cost up to 393.4 million USD, with a 10% contingency allowance, subject to available funds. The procurement process will determine the final vendor and contract details.
