Cross-river cycle shuttle bus to enable cyclists to safely travel through tunnel

The Silvertown Tunnel is currently under construction under the River Thames. The 1.4km tunnel will connect Silvertown to the Greenwich Peninsula in East London and is expected to open in 2025.

It includes a dedicated bus lane that aims to alleviate congestion at the nearby Blackwall Tunnel and enhance air quality by providing improved public transport links.

As part of this project, Stagecoach will operate a cross-river shuttle service specifically designed for cyclists. The service will enable cyclists to board the electric shuttle buses with their bikes and travel safely through the tunnel. This approach is aimed at improving connectivity for cyclists while supporting broader efforts to reduce traffic and emissions in the area.

Paul Lynch, Managing Director for Stagecoach London, said:

It is fantastic that Stagecoach can help expand the ways the local community connect to what matters most to them. This new addition to our network will build on our ambitions for a thriving local bus network with sustainability at its core.

The electric vehicles that will be used for the shuttle service form part of Stagecoach’s strategy to decarbonise its fleet and contribute to cleaner, greener public transport.
