IndyGo has unveiled its articulated electric bus manufactured by RIDE (formerly BYD) to operate on the new Purple Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route.
These 60-foot battery-electric buses are set to improve air quality and reduce noise pollution in Indianapolis, Indiana.
To further reduce emissions, IndyGo will produce a portion of the daily energy required to charge the rapid transit vehicles from the solar panels on top of its West Campus facility.
The BRT Purple Line is expected to open later this year and will stretch 15 miles, connecting downtown Indianapolis to the City of Lawrence. This will enable the transit agency to transport more people more efficiently with near-zero tailpipe emissions.
IndyGo has been working to deploy hybrid and electric buses since 2015. To date, this has delivered the following positive environmental impacts:
- 2,158,098 gallons of diesel saved
- 14,122 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) saved
- 1,450 metric tons of CO2 avoided through solar power
