The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has launched its NextGen Bus Navigation Pilot Program, aimed at assisting bus operators in navigating detours and road challenges.

In collaboration with transit technology company Swiftly, the programme will equip up to 100 buses with tablet-based turn-by-turn navigation, providing real-time directions alike to those used in navigation apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps.

The programme is supported by new features within the MBTA’s internal dispatching app, Skate. These tools allow the Operations Control Centre to create, monitor, and manage unplanned bus detours in real time, enhancing the agency’s ability to respond to disruptions.

MassDOT Secretary and CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt said:

This technology is a step forward in improving service for customers and supporting our drivers who need to be nimble when unforeseen obstacles get in the way of running vehicles on regular routes. We believe the new technology will result in more efficient bus service, reduced travel times, and improved service reliability.

The MBTA’s buses often face route challenges during events, road closures, and service changes, requiring operators to follow detours. The new navigation system addresses these complexities by providing visual and audible turn-by-turn directions, designed with input from front-line staff.

The Safety Division has played a key role in ensuring the technology enhances operator performance without causing distractions.

Swiftly’s navigation system works through off-the-shelf tablets and can be updated in real-time by dispatchers via the Skate app. These updates will eventually be shared with riders as well, providing live detour information.

MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said:

Providing our front-line bus operators with turn-by-turn directions is another example of the investments we’re making in our workforce, building a more resilient and nimble transit system.

The MBTA will evaluate the pilot programme over the coming months, with plans for a wider rollout in 2025.
