The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced two additional Manhattan bus routes will be equipped with its Automated Camera Enforcement (ACE) technology.

A 60-day warning period will begin enforcement from April 28 along both the M2 and M4 bus routes, after which any vehicles using busways and bus lanes without proper authorisation, blocking bus stops or illegally double parking will receive a fine via mail.

With the addition of the two new routes, a total of 36 routes in NYC are now equipped with ACE technology

Thus far, 34 other routes have enforced the ACE solution, with more than 1,000 buses also now equipped with the technology operating throughout New York City.

The MTA has stated that following the enforcement of ACE, average journey speeds have increased by 5%, with select corridors increasing by up to 30%, in addition to a 20% reduction in collisions and emission reductions between 5% and 10%.

Bus stop blockages have also reduced by 40% along ACE routes, with 9% of drivers fined committing a second offence following the first.

ACE, which is administered in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the New York City Department of Finance (NYCDOF), utilises cameras in order to capture video, images and license plate information before sending any material to NYCDOT for full a full review.
