Steering system manufacturer Pailton Engineering is pleased to announce the launch of its new adjustable steering column.
The column was designed and manufactured for the new range of VDL Citea buses, which will benefit from its ergonomic design and titling head mechanism.
Pailton Engineering’s new steering column for buses offers a unique tilting head mechanism, meaning a single steering column is compatible with regulatory requirements in each EU member state. Each state has different requirements, meaning that until now, a different column design was often necessary to ensure conformity with each state’s individual regulations.
The New Citea buses can all be equipped with the same steering column, as the extra level of adjustability provided by this unique feature removes the need for having to supply a different part for each country. Although previously seen in some commercial vehicles, this tilting head mechanism is a first for the bus market.
In addition to the titling head mechanism, the design also offers a tilting column and telescopic adjustability. The column is integrated with a driver workstation designed to enhance ergonomics for the driver.
The partnership between Pailton Engineering and VDL is reflective of a shared vision for transforming the bus and coach sector for a more sustainable future, while retaining an ongoing commitment to improved ergonomic conditions for drivers and passengers.
Electric buses are becoming increasingly common in urban and regional transport. Buses like the new Citea Electric range produce no emissions and create less noise disturbance too. There are currently 100 VDL Citea Electric buses in Amsterdam, the largest electric bus fleet in Europe.
Roger Brereton, Head of Sales at Pailton Engineering, said:We’re delighted to be able to announce the successful launch of this adjustable steering column. The engineering behind this steering column is the result of a fantastic collaboration which we hope to continue.
Being able to offer a single steering column that can conform with requirements in each state puts us in a unique position. This is the only product of its kind on the market and we are confident of the benefits it will bring to bus manufacturers and drivers alike.
