Cambridgeshire County Council has announced the launch of the procurement process for a major 150 million GBP guided busway project linking Cambourne and Cambridge.
The announcement marks a major milestone in the development & realisation of one of the region’s largest planned transport infrastructure schemes.

With an aim to improve public transport connectivity between growing communities to the west of Cambridge and the City Centre, the proposed development is also expected to support wider housing and economic growth objectives across Greater Cambridge as a whole.
The scheme will include guided busway infrastructure, active travel routes, bridges, drainage works and associated highway improvements.
Construction firms have now been invited to bid for the contract, with works expected to continue through to 2031 under a multi-stage procurement model designed to introduce contractors into hte development process at an earlier stage.
This approach is intended to support design validation, construction planning and cost management before commencement of the main delivery phase itself.
The project itself forms part of a series of wider efforts from local authorities to address increasing transport demand linked to population growth, housing development and employment expansion both in and around Cambridge.
According to published timelines, construction activity could begin in 2027 (subject to approvals and contract award), with the procurement process being undertaken under the UK Procurement Act 2023 framework.
