The City of Regina has added an additional 13 battery-electric buses to its public transport fleet, completing a 20-vehicle order placed in 2024.

The new arrivals replace diesel buses that have reached the end of their operational life. They follow the introduction of the city’s first seven electric buses in April 2025.

Regina’s initial batch of electric buses has operated daily over the past year, including through winter conditions. This provided a basis for assessing their performance across all seasons.

According to the city, the electric buses have performed at a similar level to diesel vehicles in day-to-day service. They produce lower greenhouse gas emissions and have reduced operating costs. Transit officials report that running a battery-electric bus costs about 0.76 CAD per kilometre, compared with 1.51 CAD per kilometre for a diesel bus.

Mayor Chad Bachynski said:

The City of Regina has had electric buses in the fleet for a full year. That means one full winter where these buses reliably moved residents to work, school, activities and home again,” said. “These buses performed well through all four seasons and support our continued commitment as a city to sustainability and green technology.

Since the initial rollout, Regina has recorded fuel savings of more than 250,000 CAD. The buses are able to operate on most routes, with an average range of around 340 kilometres on a full charge. In colder conditions, range may fall to approximately 220 kilometres.

With the full order now delivered, electric vehicles account for 20 of the city’s 123 buses, representing about 16 percent of the fleet.

Funding for the programme includes 26 million CAD from the Government of Canada, covering half the cost of acquiring the buses and upgrading Regina’s transit maintenance facility with charging infrastructure.
