Volvo Buses has unveiled a battery-electric double-decker bus developed for Hong Kong, combining its BZL Electric chassis with bodywork from MCV.
The Volvo BZL DD Electric – MCV was presented at the ReThink Hong Kong exhibition on 10 September, where Volvo said the vehicle attracted interest from bus operators, government representatives and sustainability organisations.
The bus is designed for high-capacity urban services and is the first Volvo BZL Electric double-decker developed with a 6×2 tri-axle configuration. The three-axle layout is intended to support the passenger capacity and operating requirements of Hong Kong’s urban bus network.
The vehicle combines Volvo’s electric chassis and driveline technology with double-deck bodywork developed in partnership with MCV. It produces zero tailpipe emissions during operation and is designed to reduce noise compared with conventional diesel-powered buses.
Volvo has fitted the bus with active safety technology, including an emergency braking system and electrical safety systems designed to protect passengers, drivers and other road users.
Hong Kong’s climate has also influenced the vehicle’s design. The BZL DD Electric – MCV is equipped with a heavy-duty climate control system intended to maintain passenger comfort in hot and humid conditions while managing energy consumption.
The BZL Electric platform supports different charging arrangements, allowing operators to select a system according to their operational requirements.
The bus can be charged overnight at a depot, while fast charging at up to 250 kW is also supported. The combination is intended to give operators options for managing charging around vehicle schedules and maintaining fleet availability.

The BZL DD Electric – MCV adds a battery-electric double-decker option to Volvo’s existing range of electric bus solutions as Hong Kong’s operators consider the transition from conventional propulsion to zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles.
