FOTON has signed a contract to supply 1,022 electric city buses to Santiago, Chile.

The order has a total value of 1.6 billion RMB (196m GBP | 236m USD) and sets the record for the largest order of Chinese-manufactured electric buses to be shipped overseas.

FOTON aims to use Chile as an operating model to become the leading driver of green public transportation in Latin America

FOTON states that this success is thanks to its in-depth research on the Chilean bus market, citing the country’s policy goal of electrifying all public transport by 2040.

In January, 2021, FOTON joined the Zero Emission Bus Rapid-Deployment Accelerator (ZEBRA), which was jointly launched by the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT) and C40 Cities Network with the aim of deploying over 3,000 electric buses in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Colombia.
